Meta Unveils Hyperspace Tool to Enhance Metaverse Experiences

Meta is making waves at the Meta Connect 2025 event with its introduction of Hyperspace, a groundbreaking tool designed to integrate real-world environments into the metaverse. This innovative feature, known as Hyperspace Capture, utilizes the cameras on the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets to swiftly “capture” your physical surroundings, creating a remarkably accurate digital replica that users can explore in a virtual setting. According to Meta, this marks a significant advancement towards their goal of achieving photorealistic social teleportation.

Beta Launch and Scanning Capabilities

Currently in beta, Hyperspace is being gradually rolled out to users aged 18 and older who own the Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets, beginning today. During the presentation, Meta demonstrated the scanning functionality using examples from the homes of celebrities such as Chance the Rapper and Gordon Ramsay. Users with access to the tool will soon be able to scan their own indoor environments; however, Meta has not clarified whether outdoor areas can be captured, as all showcased examples were confined to interior spaces. Importantly, users will initially be unable to visit other people’s replicated spaces, though this feature is expected to be introduced in the near future.

New Platforms for Developers: Horizon Engine and Horizon Studio

In addition to Hyperspace, Meta is launching two new platforms aimed at empowering developers and creators to construct immersive games and environments. A press release stated, “Our vision for the future is a world where anyone anywhere can imagine a character, a scene, or an entire world and create it from scratch.” The Horizon Engine is designed to enhance graphics and performance, enabling developers to generate expansive, interconnected spaces with realistic physical interactions more efficiently than ever before. According to Meta, this new engine was built from the ground up and supports significantly more users, allowing up to five times the number of individuals to engage in a single virtual space compared to its predecessor.

Tools for Quick and Easy World Building

The second tool, Meta Horizon Studio, serves as an editor and creative hub. It incorporates generative AI capabilities that can produce audio, textures, TypeScript, skyboxes, and more simply through text prompts. Meta plans to introduce AI assistants that will help streamline the creative process, making it possible to build gaming worlds in a fraction of the time it once took. The company emphasized that this approach will greatly reduce barriers to entry for aspiring creators while maintaining the potential for high-quality outputs.

New Entertainment Hub: Horizon TV

In a move to expand its entertainment offerings, Meta is launching Horizon TV, which will initially feature Disney Plus. Furthermore, partnerships with Universal and Blumhouse will bring horror films such as M3GAN and The Black Phone to the platform, complete with “immersive special effects.” This summer, several VR titles were also announced for the Meta Quest VR headsets, with Marvel’s DeadPool VR being one of the most anticipated releases. Other upcoming titles include ILM’s Star Wars: Beyond Victory and Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked, catering to fans of tabletop RPGs. All these games are set to debut this fall.
